SYDNEY is exploring the opportunity to recruit former Fremantle and Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell for 2020.

AFL.com.au understands the Swans have reached out to Bennell in recent weeks and are assessing his medical history as they weigh up making him a three-club player.

After a four-year stint at the Dockers that netted two games, the 26-year-old underwent surgery in Brisbane last month in an attempt to correct his history of calf injuries.

Any move for Bennell would cost a club nothing with his services coming as a delisted free agent.

The Dockers parted ways with the talented midfielder on July 15, but he remained adamant he had more to give.

"I'm not retiring at this stage," Bennell said.

"I'm going to work really hard on rehabbing my calf injury with a view to giving myself the chance to have another crack at playing for an AFL club."

Before opting to join the Dockers, he spoke with several clubs including a meeting with Damien Hardwick and Richmond at Punt Road in Grand Final week 2015.

Bennell spent five seasons at Gold Coast from 2011-2015 for 81 matches and 92 goals before returning to the west.
