Incidents assessed:

The match day report laid against the Geelong Cats’ Jordan Murdoch for engaging in rough conduct against the Sydney Swans’ Isaac Heeney from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is smothered after a kick and is loose between the two players. Murdoch gets to the ball first and seeks to take possession as he turns side-on. Contact is made high to Heeney. After viewing all available footage and speaking to the umpire who laid the report, it was the view of the Match Review Officer that Murdoch was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

The match day report laid against Port Adelaide’s Darcy Byrne-Jones for striking North Melbourne’s Jack Ziebell from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Ziebell has possession and is trying to avoid Byrne-Jones. As he turns back away from his opponent, his path is blocked by teammate Ben Brown and Ziebell attempts to handball the ball away. As he disposes of the ball, he begins to go to ground and high contact is made by Byrne-Jones. It was the view of the Match Review Officer the force used in the high contact was below that required for a charge to be laid.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Isaac Heeney and the Geelong Cats’ George Horlin-Smith from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was thrown in at a boundary contest. Horlin-Smith takes possession of the ball at ground level with Heeney immediately tackling him from the opposite direction. Horlin-Smith has momentum with his movement and Heeney goes to ground under the Geelong player in the tackle. Horlin-Smith’s head makes contact with the ground as part of the tackle. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Heeney’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.

Contact between Richmond’s Trent Cotchin and Collingwood’s Jarryd Blair from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Cotchin takes Blair to ground in a tackle, and the Collingwood player is paid a free kick for holding the man, with advantage given to his team mate with the ball. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that the tackle was deemed as careless. However, the impact was below the forced required to constitute a reportable offence.
