GEELONG'S depth will be tested ahead of its top-of-the-table clash with Greater Western Sydney after being left with just one fit player on the bench in the second half against Fremantle.

Cats captain Joel Selwood was knocked out in the first minute of the match after receiving a head knock to the side of his jaw from Dockers forward Hayden Ballantyne.

Around the state leagues: Who starred in your club's twos?

Selwood was clearly wobbly on his feet, but decided to walk off in the hands of trainers despite the stretcher being called onto the ground.

The courageous skipper even pushed the trainers away and jogged across the remaining stretch of field, before sitting out the game with concussion.

Defender Tom Stewart was the next casualty after accidentally clashing heads with Docker Hayden Crozier in a marking contest before half-time.

Stewart left for the rooms shortly after the incident sporting a large bump near his right eye and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken eye socket.

Speedster Darcy Lang hobbled off early in the third quarter with a left leg issue.

Lang returned momentarily after having his lower leg strapped, but left the field again clearly struggling to move freely, joining Selwood on the bench.

After the siren: Was that the best round ever?

The Brisbane Lions remain optimistic captain Dayne Beams will play again this season despite suffering a left shoulder injury against Greater Western Sydney.

Fantasy form watch: Danger leaves it late

The 27-year-old lasted just one minute in the match after being the victim of another bone-jarring, but legal, bump from Giants ruckman Shane Mumford.

Nine things we learned from round 14

Beams injured his left shoulder in the heavy hit on the wing and came off the ground using his jersey as a makeshift sling.

He spent the opening quarter on the bench with an ice pack placed on his shoulder, before wearing a sling prior to quarter-time.

Lions coach Chris Fagan was confident Beams would "recover and play some footy" again this season.

Beams has had a terrible run with injury in recent years. He had his right shoulder reconstructed in 2015 and was restricted to only two games last year – in rounds seven and eight – due to left knee tendinitis issues.

Carlton forward Jed Lamb was sent crashing to the ground when Richmond defender Bachar Houli threw back his elbow in an off-the-ball hit in the first quarter, which saw the Richmond defender reported.

The run home: How the race for the finals is shaping up

Lamb lay motionless for some time before walking off slowly in the hands of trainers and taking no further part in the match with concussion.

Giants midfielder Tim Taranto received a kick to his right shin from Lions ruckman Archie Smith in the centre circle during the third quarter.

Taranto, who had his corked shin strapped on the bench before returning, sat out the last part of the final term with ice strapped around his affected leg, given the game was already won.

Returning from a fractured cheekbone he suffered against Geelong in round 11, Adelaide small defender Luke Brown was in the wars again with a left ankle issue.

The 24-year-old landed on his ankle in a marking contest midway through the final quarter and was on crutches after the game with his leg heavily wrapped in ice.

Brown attempted to perform run-throughs along the boundary but did not return.

In other injury concerns in round 14:

- Gold Coast midfielder Pearce Hanley experienced left hamstring tightness early in the final quarter against St Kilda when he lunged to put pressure on an opponent. The 28-year-old sat out the rest of the game.

- Carlton midfielder Ed Curnow went to the rooms early in the match against Richmond and had his right knee strapped before returning. Curnow received more attention at quarter time.

- Richmond forward Daniel Rioli dislocated his finger in the third quarter against Carlton and returned after having it popped back into place.

- Melbourne pair Jeff Garlett and Christian Salem both finished the game against West Coast on the bench with hamstring tightness, with the latter spending much of the last quarter with ice strapped around his leg.

- Melbourne co-captain Jack Viney played out the game against West Coast with a sore right shoulder after receiving a heavy bump from Eagles skipper Shannon Hurn early in the second half. Viney went to the rooms for treatment during the third term and did not let the issue affect his on-field performance.

- West Coast captain Shannon Hurn was flattened by Melbourne's Jack Viney in a heavy mid-air collision in the final minutes of the match. Hurn appeared to be in a bad way after his head took the brunt of Viney's hip, but the Eagle slowly managed to get back to his feet and walk to the bench, where he spent the closing minutes.

- North Melbourne captain Jack Ziebell had a right shoulder issue early in the final term against the Western Bulldogs and returned after having his arm re-strapped. Kangaroos coach Brad Scott said "the early signs are good" given Ziebell took a strong overhead mark after coming back on.

- Western Bulldogs utility Liam Picken went to the rooms late in the third quarter against North Melbourne – immediately after waltzing into an open goal – because of a left knee complaint. Picken began the last quarter with his knee strapped. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said Picken had suffered a "slight strain in his medial ligament", but the medicos expected him to be fine.

- Western Bulldogs youngster Zaine Cordy limped off late in the game against the Kangaroos. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge was unsure of the 20-year-old's injury status after the game, but said "it doesn't seem to be anything major at the moment".

- Returning from a lengthy hamstring injury, Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne suffered an injury scare after hobbling off in the first quarter against Geelong. Ballantyne's right foot collided into Tom Hawkins' leg as the Docker tried to kick the ball, but he had his ankle re-strapped and returned.

- Fremantle debutant Sean Darcy landed heavily on his right shoulder at a centre bounce ruck contest in the final term against Geelong, but remained on the ground.

- Port Adelaide defender Jack Hombsch landed on his left knee as he spoiled a marking attempt early in the game against Collingwood and spent about 10 minutes off the ground. The 24-year-old returned with his knee heavily strapped and played out the game.

- Port Adelaide duo Justin Westhoff (thumb) and Matt White (hamstring) received treatment during the match against the Magpies, but they both finished the game.

- Collingwood defender Tyson Goldsack shook off a corked right thigh he picked up in a knock from teammate Tom Langdon early in the third quarter against Port Adelaide. Goldsack performed run-throughs and hopped on an exercise bike before returning.

- Hawthorn defender Taylor Duryea had his left knee strapped during the third quarter against Adelaide, but came back on shortly after.

- Adelaide midfielder Wayne Milera had his right knee assessed just before three-quarter time against Hawthorn, but featured in the final term.
