FREMANTLE star Murphy Reid is in doubt for Friday night's clash against Adelaide after copping a painful knock to the groin that could sidelined him for the first time in his two AFL seasons. 

Reid missed Wednesday's main training session and is being monitored ahead of selection on Thursday, with coach Justin Longmuir revealing he took a hit to the "nether regions" early in last Saturday's clash against Melbourne at the MCG. 

The 20-year-old has not missed a game since making his debut in round one last season and is keen to continue playing if cleared, rather than taking the opportunity to be managed ahead of finals.  

"He's in a bit of doubt … he got a hit in the nether regions and we're just monitoring it," Longmuir said on Wednesday. 

"We'll weigh it up. If we get a bit closer to the game and the doc say there's nothing to worry about, then we'll look to play him because he's got no other issues going on. 

"He's handling the workload really well and he wants to keep playing. But we'll make that call a bit later." 

If Reid is sidelined, the Dockers have several options to consider, with speedy half-forward Chris Scerri on the cusp of selection in recent weeks after playing seven AFL games in the first half of the season. 

Versatile midfielder Corey Wagner is also pushing to return from a hip injury and trained away from the main group on Wednesday with defender Brandon Walker (shoulder) as both prepare for fitness tests. 

The Dockers will regain captain Alex Pearce for Friday night's clash after the key defender was rested against Melbourne, with a three-pronged tall Adelaide forward line looming as Darcy Fogarty returns from suspension. 

Asked if the Dockers could select a taller backline to combat Riley Thilthorpe, Taylor Walker and Fogarty, Longmuir said "never say never", with Brennan Cox and Oscar McDonald already in the team.

A win on Friday night would secure the minor premiership, but Longmuir said it was critical for Freo to focus on its immediate challenge this week, rather than look ahead to finals. 

"We want to make sure that we use the next two weeks against teams that are going really well and play finals-like footy to get us in good order," Longmuir said. 

"We've tried not to get too far ahead of ourselves all season and it is a tricky one when you come to this part of the season and so close to finals and we're clear on top of the ladder. 

"It is hard to stay in the moment, but we've got to make sure we do that and make sure that we apply ourselves and give us our best chance to perform well against Adelaide."

The Dockers' second ruck position remains an area for discussion at match committee, with Sean Darcy's WAFL form keeping him in the mix this week for the position being filled by Mason Cox. 

Longmuir said it was not an option to use Luke Jackson as a sole ruckman after a full season successfully playing two big men. 

"Sean's putting pressure on. He's playing really well," Longmuir said.

"His last two weeks he's worked on things that we want him to work on and we'll weigh up that form against Mason's form in the AFL. 

"We'll have that discussion later and see where it falls."

Asked about Darcy's long-term future at the club, Longmuir was emphatic, declaring: "He's contracted to the club. I see Sean playing a big part in us going forward."
