IN FRONT of a record crowd, Sydney's AFLW side has claimed a hard-fought 24-point victory over Essendon at the SCG on Sunday afternoon, prevailing in an intense, physical arm-wrestle that sizzled with raw emotion after a difficult week off the field for the Swans.

In front of a record crowd of 16,672, the 9.12 (66) to 6.6 (42) win marked just the second time the AFLW team has played for premiership points at the venue, with Sydney holding firm on home turf.

The emotions were evident from the outset both on the field and in the stands, with spectators holding signs showing support for the women's team and the crowd erupting in cheers when the Swans kicked their first goal.

Several players also made their feelings clear, with Chloe Molloy celebrating a goal by making a 'W' with her hands while Taylor Smith tugged at her guernsey after one of hers.

For the Swans, Ally Morphett dominated in the air and on the move, finishing with eight disposals, 18 hitouts, and a massive presence around the ground. Smith proved crucial with two goals, while Laura Gardiner led the way through midfield with 30 disposals.

For the Bombers, Sophie Alexander booted a game-high three goals, while Madison Prespakis worked tirelessly to gather a game-high 32 disposals.

Adding injury to insult, Essendon's Maddison Gay suffered an arm injury during the fourth quarter after coming from behind to lay a tackle.

The Swans edged the inside-50 count 39–33 and dominated the stoppages with a 29-20 clearance advantage. Sydney was also far more efficient going forward, converting 53.8 per cent of its entries compared to the Bombers’ 45.5 per cent.

The Bombers dominated early territory, but Swans ruck Morphett held the line with a clutch goal-line mark to deny an early opener. 

Both sides took the game on, but accuracy proved elusive amid a flurry of early behinds. 

The breakthrough came via Essendon midfielder Maggie Johnstone, who converted a 14th-minute turnover set shot before a brief scuffle ensued. 

On the verge of quarter time, Swans forward Sarah Grunden curled through a crucial forward-intercept goal on the run to give Sydney a three-point lead.

Alexander opened the second quarter for Essendon, snapping from a tight angle after snatching a handball out of a pack. 

Trading goals, Maddie Quinn quickly responded for Sydney, earning a set shot from a ruck contest and converting cleanly for her first AFLW major. 

However, Emily Gough finished off a slick forward 50 entry to give Essendon a two-point lead at half-time. 

Throughout the term, Sydney struggled to transition out of defence, with Essendon repeatedly intercepting clearing kicks to keep the pressure locked inside 50.

Opening the third, Bonnie Toogood finished off a slick team passage to extend Essendon's lead, before Sydney strung together consecutive goals for the first time all day to regain the ascendancy. 

Star recruit Smith shrugged off an injury concern to toe one through, followed quickly by Molloy, who kept her feet to solo goal.

As the Swans turned up the pressure, Holly Cooper executed a brilliant smother before Sofia Hurley picked up at ground level and snapped around the body to extend the lead. 

Smith then snagged her second of the term, proudly grabbing at her red-and-white jumper, before Alexander halted Sydney's four-goal run with a coast-to-coast major to trim the deficit to 10 at the final break.

In her 25th milestone game, Paris McCarthy slotted a goal as the Swans rolled on.

More than 16,000 fans packed the SCG, shattering Sydney's previous AFLW crowd record. The turnout of 16,672 followed a turbulent week in which Sydney's club culture and attitude towards women were called into question. Five senior players received season-ending suspensions following a Melbourne hotel incident that sparked a police investigation. In response, a widespread push across the footy community — led by commentators and rival AFLW players — urged fans to attend the match in solidarity. The record-breaking crowd far surpassed the club’s previous high of 8,264 fans, set at its inaugural game at North Sydney Oval in 2022.
