PORT Adelaide's Ella Heads will be nervously awaiting the weekend's MRO findings after executing a bump on Melbourne's Eliza McNamara that Kate McCarthy is calling "one of the worst I've seen on the AFLW field."

In the fourth quarter of Port Adelaide’s loss to the Dees on Sunday, Heads elected to bump McNamara as she was disposing of the ball but came in awkwardly, with her right shoulder swinging around to knock the Demon in the jaw.

McNamara left the field in the hands of club physios and was immediately transferred to hospital, with expectations the incident has left her with a fractured jaw.

"I think this one, the attention is going to go to Ella Heads, because that was a really poor challenge for mine," McCarthy said on AFL.com.au's The Wrap.

"I think she'll be sent straight to the Tribunal for that. It’s at most sort of high contact, it'll be severe (impact) if she’s broken her jaw though. I think she's looking at three to four weeks for that.

"It was probably one of the worst bumps I've seen on the AFLW field, in regard to being late, being high and just being really careless, and not eliciting that duty of care that we now know is placed on you as an AFLW player when you elect to bump."

The Wrap co-host Gemma Bastiani noted that a suspension beyond three weeks would be record-breaking in AFLW, with the three-week sanction already rare within the short 12-week home and away season.

"We have seen three players suspended for three matches in the AFLW before, we’ve never had four matches suspended," Bastiani said.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if this broke some sort of record there."

Whilst McCarthy is empathetic that Heads could miss nearly a third of her AFLW season, she also stressed that the impact of her actions will likely see the in-form Dees without one of their standout players for even longer.  

"Having a four-match suspension, it’s such a percentage of the season, it’s a third of the season essentially that you’re saying that someone’s going to miss," McCarthy said.

"So if it's sent to the tribunal, it’s a minimum of three weeks really with the way that it’s graded, and I think we may see north of three weeks with an incident like that.

"But you look at a bump like that, and Eliza McNamara is probably going to miss more than a third of the season, for the bump that’s been placed on her.  

"Eliza McNamara has been so vital too to this team, for the Dees, but we wish her all the best and speedy recovery."
