QBE SYDNEY SWANS ACADEMY

Established in 2010, the QBE Sydney Swans Academy identifies and develops the next generation of AFL and AFLW talent across New South Wales.

Each year, the Academy supports up to 700 male and female athletes aged 11–19 across metropolitan and regional NSW. The program combines football development, strength and conditioning, high-performance education and personal development in a professional, age-appropriate environment.

The Top End program supports Under 16 and Under 18 male and female squads, providing a pathway from junior football towards elite AFL and AFLW environments. Athletes train and compete against other leading Academy and Talent League programs.

The Academy develops more than footballers, helping young athletes build the skills, behaviours and personal qualities needed to thrive in high-performance sport.

  • Deliver consistently high standards of care through sound clinical judgement and strong governance.
  • Lead individualised rehabilitation and evidence-informed return-to-running, training and competition programs.
  • Clearly communicate athlete restrictions, progress and readiness, aligning rehabilitation with strength and conditioning and broader performance plans.
  • Lead screening, injury-prevention and athlete-health initiatives that improve availability, resilience and long-term development.
  • Educate athletes on injury prevention, recovery, training load, concussion and effective self-management.
  • Oversee medical operations, including clinical workflows, documentation, athlete management systems, injury surveillance, equipment and medical readiness.
  • Coordinate external providers and use injury, availability and rehabilitation data to inform clinical and prevention strategies.
  • Work closely with the Academy Doctor, performance team, coaches, athletes, parents and external providers to support informed, aligned decisions.
  • Build a professional and accountable medical environment, support intern development and contribute to high-performance planning and continuous improvement.
