JOSH Carr has used Port Adelaide's off-season to broaden his coaching education, spending the past fortnight embedded with Premier League club Sunderland.Â
Carr has previously headed overseas for personal development courses and has again used his off-season to find ways to enhance his learning for the role as he heads into his second season in charge of the Power.
The Port premiership player has been at Sunderland over the past fortnight as the Black Cats won promotion to the EPL in 2025 for the first time in eight years, with the team now in its second consecutive season in the top-flight competition.
He was there for the back end of Port's trade period, where the club amassed a stack of future selections and came out strongly from Zak Butters' departure, and will soon head back to Australia ahead of Port's pre-season campaign.Â
Carr has looked abroad for different coaching methods and principles before, including at the end of 2023 when he travelled to America as part of a small group with the AFL Coaches Association, where they visited different universities and spoke with a range of lecturers, coaches and psychologists.Â
Coaches often use the off-season to broaden their skillset, with West Coast's coach Andrew McQualter travelling to the US to spend time with two NBA teams recently.Â
Carr isn't the only Port figure in the UK, with AFL.com.au revealing on Tuesday that captain Connor Rozee had flown to England to work with a hamstring specialist as he ramps up his recovery from his serious hamstring surgery and nerve issue suffered early in the 2025 season.
Rozee and Carr were together at the recent Liverpool and Brentford EPL match.Â
