JUSTIN Longmuir has been approached to coach Western Australia at next year's AAMI AFL Origin clash, with the Fremantle Grand Final coach tipped to take on the position.
Sydney coach Dean Cox was the first coach of the Western Australian team as the AFL Origin made its return earlier this year in the clash with Victoria, with Chris Scott steering the Vics.
But the AFL has looked at rotating its senior coach positions for the Origin games, with Western Australia to take on South Australia next February.
It is understood Longmuir, who came heartbreakingly close to becoming the first ever Fremantle premiership coach in the club's Grand Final defeat to Brisbane last month, has been approached by the League to take the helm of the WA side in the second year of the Origin reboot.
Longmuir was drafted to Fremantle from West Perth in the 1998 intake, having grown up in the rural Western Australian town of Koorda.
Collingwood coach Craig McRae is all but locked in to take the reins of the South Australian team, which is set to include the likes of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Izak Rankine and Jordan Dawson.
The Magpies' 2023 premiership coach was quickly the hot favourite to take on the South Australian coaching job when it was confirmed his home state would be taking part in the game next year, with the Brisbane premiership player set to get the nod.
The AFL is expected to confirm the coaching appointments for both teams in November, with players also set to start being locked in for the game, which will be held on Saturday, February 27 at Optus Stadium.
The 2028 AFL Origin game will feature South Australia and Victoria playing at Adelaide Oval as part of the rotating program.
