COLLINGWOOD has announced it will commission an external review into its AFLW program.
The Pies are the second club to do so over the upcoming off-season, with St Kilda's external review already underway, while Essendon has opted to stick with an internal review with a broader scope than normal.
Coach Sam Wright stepped down on Tuesday, but will coach out the final game of the season on Sunday.
The Pies currently sit in 17th with a 1-10 win-loss record, and skipper Ruby Schleicher has already confirmed she will be returning to Western Australia in the upcoming trade period.
A number of other senior players – including Tarni White and the contracted Jordy Allen – are being hotly pursued by rival clubs, while Mattea Breed, Lauren Butler, Bri Davey, Sarah Rowe and Violet Patterson remain out of contract, among others.
"Our AFLW program is an integral part of the Collingwood football club and we are committed to ensuring it is positioned for sustained success," president Barry Carp said.
"The board, together with the executive team, acknowledges that we haven’t got it right – we take responsibility for that and are committed to getting better, both on and off the field.
"Engaging an expert outside Collingwood is important for us to provide a broader perspective, challenge our existing approaches and identify what needs to improve or change.
"As part of their work, together with the club’s AFLW subcommittee, the independent external expert will develop clear recommendations and ensure we have the right foundations to support the program’s long-term success.
"We have a responsibility to our players, coaches, staff, members, supporters and the wider game to listen to feedback and be prepared to make meaningful, considered changes across the club to build a stronger AFLW program for everyone at Collingwood."
The Magpies last made finals in season seven, 2022, and under Wright, have won five of 29 games.
