GOLD Coast ruckman Zac Smith has joined Geelong, with North Melbourne ruckman Daniel Currie replacing him at the Suns.

The Suns shipped Smith to Geelong in exchange for picks 49 and 53.

Gold Coast then on-traded pick 53 to the Kangaroos in exchange for Currie.

It effectively means the Suns have traded Smith for Currie and selection 49.

Smith, 25, was an inaugural Sun and has played 65 games in five seasons but has clearly fallen behind Tom Nicholls as the club's first choice ruck and is hoping for more opportunity with the Cats.

Smith told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday that he would be able to regain his best form at Geelong.

"I'm very, very confident about that. I'm looking forward to having a good crack at the pre-season this year and being around a really good environment," Smith said.

"For me, it's just really about improvement (and) I can see myself improving considerably down there."

Smith played 22 games this season – 11 each in the AFL and NEAFL – after missing a large part of 2014 due to a knee reconstruction and ankle injury.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said the Cats were looking to add to their ruck depth, the Smith’s recruitment bolstering Mark Blicavs, Rhys Stanley and Nathan Vardy.

"Ruckmen tend to mature later than other types of players, and Zac is coming into a time where he will improve his game with the experience he has gathered," Scott said.

"He has shown talent and resiliency throughout his career and we see our environment as being conducive to his continued development."

Currie has been stuck behind All Australian ruckman Todd Goldstein at the Kangaroos and played just four AFL games in his career, and none in 2015.

The 26-year-old is expected to largely play at NEAFL level, but provide solid support for Nicholls.

"He is a seasoned AFL player, and will add depth and experience to our senior list," Gold Coast general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said.

Gold Coast is still trying to negotiate a trade with Port Adelaide for full forward Charlie Dixon.
