The Crows returned to competition after Phil Walsh's death saw the cancellation of their match against South Adelaide last weekend.

In his comeback from a second knee reconstruction, defender Andy Otten had 16 touches and took six marks in his first hit-out since last August.

Midfielder Sam Kerridge got through unscathed in his return from an ankle injury, collecting 23 possessions (11 contested) and eight clearances in the Crows' 35-point loss.

Fellow onballer Rory Atkins finished with a game-high 29 disposals and a goal, while recently promoted rookie Reilly O'Brien accumulated a career-high 48 hit-outs in the ruck to go with his 10 touches.

Brisbane Lions

Defender Tom Cutler, who was omitted from the Lions squad in round 14, will again come into AFL contention after amassing a game-high 35 possessions (21 kicks, 14 handballs) in the Lions' 30-point loss.

Youngster Liam Dawson impressed with 31 touches (24 kicks, seven handballs) and a game-high 21 marks.

Backmen Josh McGuinness (29 touches) and Mitch Golby (28) were kept busy in defensive 50, while omitted pair Hugh Beasley and Ryan Lester battled hard for 22 touches apiece.

Carlton

Irishman Ciaran Byrne made a promising return from a hamstring injury he suffered at training in April, gathering 21 touches in limited game time playing off half-back.

Newly promoted rookie Blaine Johnson led the Blues' goalkicking with two goals in the low-scoring affair, while rookie Bradley Walsh collected 23 touches in the 24-point loss.

Collingwood

Forward Patrick Karnezis booted four goals – including three first-quarter goals – in the Magpies' 68-point loss.

Midfielders Levi Greenwood and defender Ben Sinclair (one goal) both continued to build continuity on the field after overcoming injury.

Midfielder Ed Langdon, the brother of Collingwood's Tom, amassed a game-high 34 touches (20 kicks, 14 handballs), 13 marks and a goal in his return from a hamstring injury.

Backman Cameron Sutcliffe was next best with 30 disposals (17 kicks, 13 handballs) and nine marks, while onballer Jacob Ballard performed well with 28 touches (10 kicks, 18 handballs).

Livewire Hayden Crozier finished with 27 possessions (19 kicks, eight handballs) and a goal to round out Peel's 26-point victory.

Geelong

Luckless forward Daniel Menzel made a successful return from a fourth knee reconstruction, finishing with 17 touches (14 contested), 10 clearances and two tackles.

The 23-year-old played three quarters mainly through the midfield and was rested in the last term.

"I haven't had any doubts. I feel like we've done so much work in the gym … that I always knew if we got a good crack at it, my body would hold up," Menzel said after the game.

Forward Shane Kersten booted the match-winning goal from a set shot to give the Cats a two-point win, while George Horlin-Smith (26 touches) and Sam Blease (24) also found the ball.

Gold Coast

This weekend: Southport v Gold Coast - Saturday July 11, 1.30pm, Fankhauser Reserve

Big man Peter Wright kicked an equal game-high four goals from his 16 possessions in the Suns' 30-point triumph.

Experienced backman Andrew Raines led the possession count with 26 disposals (15 kicks, 11 handballs), while rookie Josh Glenn was also prominent with 24 touches (18 kicks, six handballs).

Ruckman Zac Smith racked up 21 touches (16 kicks, five handballs), a match-high 12 marks and three goals in an impressive display.

GWS

State league affiliate: UWS Giants (NEAFL)
This weekend: UWS Giants v Aspley - Sunday July 12, 9.30am, Spotless Stadium

Key forward Jon Patton made an encouraging return from a second knee reconstruction, collecting six possessions (four kicks, two handballs) and a goal in the Giants' 94-point win.

The 22-year-old entered the game at the 12-minute mark of the third quarter and played out the rest of the match.

Midfielder Josh Kelly was the Giants' major ball winner with 30 disposals (23 kicks, seven handballs), 10 tackles and two goals.

Defender Nathan Wilson was the next best with 25 touches (19 kicks, six handballs), while Will Hoskin-Elliott continued to build confidence with 20 disposals (16 kicks, four handballs) and a goal.

In attack, Jed Lamb and draftee Jarrod Pickett booted three goals each.

Hawthorn

Forward Sam Grimley kicked an after-the-siren goal after taking a hanger in the goalsquare to give his side a thrilling five-point win.

The 24-year-old finished with two goals, while Alex Woodward, Jonathon Ceglar, Angus Litherland and Jonathan Simpkin were all named among the Hawks' best.

Melbourne

After collecting 29 touches last week, midfielder Viv Michie was again influential with 31 disposals in Casey's 49-point victory.

Fellow Demons Jack Grimes (13 tackles) and Jimmy Toumpas (11 tackles) relished the wet conditions, while midfielder Aidan Riley (26 touches) and ruckman Mark Jamar (23 touches) also played a part in the win.

Forward Jayden Hunt, the No.57 selection in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, led the goalkicking with two majors.

North Melbourne

Omitted small forward Lindsay Thomas had 15 touches, four inside 50s and a goal in his first game for North Ballarat in almost three years.

"(Thomas) came out with a good attitude, we spoke before the game and to the boys as well about what his role was – it was a pretty good effort from him," North Melbourne development coach Jarred Moore told AFL.com.au.

Forward Aaron Black had 10 possessions, nine marks and kicked three second-quarter goals in the Roosters' five-point defeat, while omitted onballer Trent Dumont gathered 17 disposals and seven tackles.

For Werribee, rookie Will Fordham took the honours for the Roos-listed players, accumulating 19 touches and four inside 50s in the two-point loss.

Tall Mason Wood was also kept busy and managed to collect 13 touches and seven marks despite the tough conditions.

Port Adelaide

Like Adelaide, the Magpies returned to the SANFL competition after last week's match against North Adelaide was cancelled in the wake of Phil Walsh's death.

Ball-winner Aaron Young led the way for the Power-listed players with 24 touches, while omitted on-baller Andrew Moore was also solid with 21 disposals in an agonising one-point loss. 

Forwards John Butcher and Jesse Palmer led the goalkicking with two apiece.

Richmond

Coming off the back of 30 disposals last weekend, newly promoted rookie Matt Thomas continued his run with 27 possessions, 11 tackles and nine clearances in the Tigers' 24-point win. 

The in-form 28-year-old was complemented by second-year utility Ben Lennon with 25 touches, while David Astbury and Liam McBean slotted two goals apiece.

St Kilda

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Sandringham v Coburg - Sunday July 12, 2pm, Trevor Barker Beach Oval

Left-footed utility Brodie Murdoch was named the most damaging Saints-listed player in Sandringham's 15-point come-from-behind win in the wet.

"Murdoch came into the side late (and) was tremendous through the midfield. He racked up 24 touches in those conditions … and impacted defensively through his tackling," Zebras coach Paul Hudson told AFL.com.au.

Hudson said Nathan Wright performed well off half-back and finished with 16 disposals, while draftee Hugh Goddard also "stood up down back" with seven marks.

Forwards Ahmed Saad (six touches) and Eli Templeton led the goalkicking with two apiece.

Sydney Swans

Midfielder Isaac Heeney, who was taken by the Swans with pick No.18 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, led the disposal count with 29 touches (21 kicks, eight handballs) and eight tackles in the Swans' 30-point win.

Onballer Craig Bird also played a crucial role in the win, finishing with 26 disposals (15 kicks, 11 handballs) alongside fellow ball-winner George Hewett (13 kicks, 13 handballs).

Ruckman Toby Nankervis responded well to his demotion with 21 possessions (10 kicks, 11 handballs), five marks and five tackles.

Forward Brandon Jack, the younger brother of Swans co-captain Kieran, booted two goals, with James Rose and rookie Nic Newman also chiming in with two goals each.

West Coast

State league affiliate: East Perth (WAFL)
This weekend: East Perth v Subiaco - Saturday July 11, 2.15pm, Medibank Stadium

Midfielder Brant Colledge was a standout for the Eagles-listed players, gathering 29 disposals (17 kicks, 12 handballs) and five marks in the 23-point defeat.

Ruckman Fraser McInnes had 18 touches (nine kicks, nine handballs), laid 10 tackles and accumulated 20 hit-outs.

Irishman Paddy Brophy, the Eagles' first ever international rookie, was also a solid contributor with 20 touches (10 kicks, 10 handballs).

Western Bulldogs

This weekend: Footscray v Collingwood - Saturday July 11, 1pm, Whitten Oval

Draftee Bailey Dale, the No.45 pick in last year's NAB AFL Draft, led the way for the Bulldogs-listed players with 26 possessions and four goals in his side's 68-point win.

In his third straight game since overcoming an ankle injury, Stewart Crameri recaptured some of his best form with 23 touches and three goals.

Defender Shane Biggs had 24 disposals, onballer Lin Jong added 21 touches and big man Ayce Cordy kicked two goals.
