ST KILDA small forward Jack Lonie will have scans this week on the leg injury he played through in the club's loss to Fremantle.

The first-year forward, who has played 16 games and kicked 12 goals in his debut season, hurt his leg in the opening term of the Saints' 37-point loss on Sunday.

He spent a chunk of the second term on the interchange bench having it assessed before returning to the field and playing out the game, but coach Alan Richardson said the club will investigate if Lonie has suffered any further damage.

Five talking points: St Kilda v Fremantle

"It's a lower leg issue. Hopefully it's just quite a significant bruise, possibly to the bone area, but we'll get scans and see where that ends up," Richardson said post-game.

It was one of a number of fitness concerns out of the game for the Saints, with many coming in what Richardson called a "really frustrating" second term.

As Lonie was having his leg checked, half-back Daniel McKenzie was subbed out of the game with concussion and Jack Sinclair also underwent a concussion test, which he cleared to return.

Shane Savage was another Saint to leave the field in pain with a persistent hip/back concern, with the coaches trying to get as much out of him despite his fitness restrictions.

The handful of worries didn't stop the Saints from kicking five goals to one in the final term to cut back a deficit that looked set to be larger, a point that pleased Richardson.

"It makes the finish of the game all the more impressive really, given the state the group was in," he said.

"It was very frustrating and disappointing for the players involved, but to the guys' credit they hung in there."

The Saints face another four finals contenders to finish the year, with contests against North Melbourne, Geelong, the Sydney Swans and West Coast to close 2015.

They have won six games this year – an improvement on four last season – and Richardson expects his side to not limp to the line.

"That'd be really disappointing if that were to happen. That would be blokes just falling away and almost giving up. I'd be surprised [if that happened] given what I've seen of the group so far," he said.
