FORMER Geelong great Steve Johnson says he's open to extending his AFL career at another club next season.

Johnson says he's upset at being axed by the Cats, believing he still has more to offer as an AFL player.

"I'm certainly open to playing on," Johnson told Channel Nine.

"I still feel like I have got a bit left in the tank.

"If the right scenario came, where a club thought I could fit in well to their system, I would certainly consider that.

"But until those opportunities arise and they are put in front of me, I guess I won't know."

The 32-year-old said other clubs had approached his manager and "there may be a bit of interest".

Johnson, a triple-premiership player in his 253-game career at Geelong, said he wouldn't be continuing his career just to prove a point to the Cats.

"I would be going for the right reasons, if I felt I may be able to help a club," he said.

"I probably wouldn't be welcome back at Geelong if I was to go to a Hawthorn but I'm not going to say no to anything.

"I really do need the emotion to be taken out of what has been a pretty big 10 days and I will be in a clearer frame of mind to go on and see what is ahead."

Four-time premiership coach Kevin Sheedy saw plenty of Johnson's magic while at the helm of the Bombers and Greater Western Sydney, and says if it were up to him, he'd take a punt on the 2007 Norm Smith medallist.

"If I was coaching Essendon in my day, I wouldn't hesitate (in taking him)," Sheedy said on Melbourne radio station SEN.

"I never worry about the birth date of a person.

"Just imagine if he was in the Richmond team right now."
