ST KILDA captain Nick Riewoldt will continue his illustrious career into a 17th season after signing a one-year contract extension.

Riewoldt, who played his 300th game earlier this season, could now move to second overall on the games played list at St Kilda next season, behind Robert Harvey, who played 383 games for the club.

The 33-year-old said his mind and body were willing to continue and he was excited about the future at St Kilda.

"It's been a really enjoyable year so far," Riewoldt said.

"We know we've still got a lot of challenges in front of us and a lot of improvement to make, but I'm really excited about the future and the direction of the club.

"For me it was about making sure my body was right and my mind was right to continue, and then having the support of the club to do so.

"We're all pretty happy to keep moving forward, so I'm excited."

Riewoldt, who will miss Sunday's clash against Carlton at Etihad Stadium with a knee complaint, said his body was more than capable of continuing at the highest level.

"It's probably been the best I've felt for four or five years to be honest," he said.

"Clearly I had a bit of a setback on the weekend, but hopefully I'll only miss the one week and I'll be back after the bye, which I'm looking forward to.

"As long as your mind's willing to keep going and do the work, then you can overcome certain setbacks."

Riewoldt said he had been refreshed and invigorated by the club's young players, as well as coach Alan Richardson's game plan, which centres on applying pressure.

"When we've played really well this year it's been on the back of our pressure and defence," the veteran forward said.

"As a young player or an older player for that matter, that's all you can ask for."

He said a move onto a wing this year had also added to his enjoyment of the game.

The skipper wasn't sure if he would continue to captain the club, as he has since 2007 for a record 210 games, including a stint in 2005.

"The way Jack Steven has performed this year, his leadership continues to develop," Riewoldt said.

"And Jack Newnes and Mav Weller as well, two young guys coming into the leadership group and doing a great job."

Riewoldt, who has played 309 games, is on track to pass third-placed Stewart Loewe (321 games) and second-placed Nathan Burke (323 games) on the games played list early next year.
