COLLINGWOOD father-son draftee Josh Daicos is set to make his first appearance in black and white on Thursday night in the opening JLT Community Series clash against Essendon.

High-profile recruit Daniel Wells will have to wait, however, with the former North Melbourne midfielder left out of the 29-man squad as he builds form and fitness.

Daicos, the son of champion forward Peter, impressed in last week's intra-club match and has been named alongside returning forward Jamie Elliott, who missed the entire 2016 season with a serious back injury.

Notable absentees for the Magpies include captain Scott Pendlebury, star midfielder Adam Treloar, ruckman Brodie Grundy and defender Ben Reid, who is recovering from a knee injury.

Midfielder Steele Sidebottom will captain the team in Pendlebury's absence.

Matthew Scharenberg and Jackson Ramsay return following serious knee injuries, while rookie recruits Liam Mackie and Max Lynch could be unveiled.

The Magpies have also named recruits Lynden Dunn (Melbourne), Will Hoskin-Elliott (Greater Western Sydney), Chris Mayne (Fremantle) and Henry Schade (Gold Coast).

Defender Lachlan Keeffe has been named after his doping suspension expired on February 10.

The Magpies will take on a Bombers team starting a new chapter as stars Jobe Watson and Dyson Heppell return for their first competitive matches in more than 16 months.

The Bombers are also set to unveil prized No.1 pick Andrew McGrath.

Seven Bombers who were suspended as part of the club's supplements scandal have been named to return, including new captain Heppell.

He is joined in the 29-man squad by Michael Hurley, David Myers, Travis Colyer, Heath Hocking, Ben Howlett and Watson.

The Bombers have also named free agent recruit Josh Green (Brisbane Lions) and trade acquisition James Stewart (Greater Western Sydney) for their first games in red and black.

Notable absentees for the Bombers include tall forward Joe Daniher, key defender Cale Hooker and midfielder Brent Stanton.
