PORT Adelaide has secured the services of 2004 premiership players Brett Montgomery and Jarrad Schofield as assistant coaches ahead of next season.

Montgomery is poised to return to the coaching box for the first time since leaving the Western Bulldogs in the middle of their 2016 premiership success.

Having spent the past two years as director of football at Melbourne Grammar, Montgomery has also consulted to Greater Western Sydney since his departure from Whitten Oval.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity to coach again at the highest level but it just means that little bit more when you’re able to coach at a club that you’ve played at and love and feel a passion for," Montgomery said.

"I’m really excited about the opportunity to work under Ken (Hinkley).

"I can’t wait to get in and give him whatever assistance he needs and then just connect with the other coaches and the players, I can’t wait to get stuck into it."

Schofield is fresh off his third WAFL premiership in six seasons with Subiaco on Sunday, and has finally committed to continue his development under Hinkley at Alberton.

Schofield had been in the sights of Power officials for several months following the departure of senior assistant Matthew Nicks (Greater Western Sydney) and Brendon Lade (St Kilda).

"When I spoke to other clubs at the end of 2017 I felt like I had unfinished business with Subiaco but now the time is right," Schofield said.

"I’ve been very fortunate to coach a strong group of self-driven players and I couldn’t have asked for a better script to end my time at a club where I played my football as a junior.

"Coming back to Port Adelaide is very exciting for me because the club gave me so much during my career and I am eager to give something back.

"I am looking forward to meeting and working with Ken and the other coaches."

Both Montgomery and Schofield have signed three-year deals.

It is understood Schofield will look after the midfield in 2019 with Michael Voss to replace Nicks in a more senior role.

During the WAFL mid-season bye earlier this year, Schofield spent time alongside Hinkley in the Power's inner sanctum in the lead-up to round eight.

In a year where Schofield's Subiaco side went undefeated, the 43-year-old was also rewarded with the WAFL coach of the year.
