GREATER Western Sydney youngster Jye Caldwell is "a super footballer" who couldn't have done any more to boost his odds of a round one debut, senior assistant Matthew Nicks says.

Caldwell, the Giants' top draftee from last year at No.11, finished with 14 disposals in the win agains the Swans but the attributes he displayed were those a player with serious potential.

He defied a tight angle on the run to slot his second goal, and showed his strength with a fend-off on Sydney's George Hewett.

Caldwell's efforts came eight days after he excelled in a scratch match, also against the Swans.

The Giants face Essendon in their season opener, with Dylan Shiel set to represent the red and black against his former side.

GWS used the first-round pick it received in the Shiel trade on Caldwell, and the early signs are he could, in time, be an ideal replacement for the explosive midfielder.

"He's our first pick, he's a super footballer," Nicks told reporters after the Giants' 22-point victory at Blacktown.

"He's going to take a while obviously to settle into the speed of the game but it's the second game now in a row – we had a praccy match against Sydney last week and he played really well in that (and) was one of the standouts for us.

"Just his inside work and his body work for a young kid, he puts his body on the line and his teammates love that."

The Giants expect to have key midfielders Josh Kelly and Jacob Hopper return for next Friday's clash with Adelaide but Caldwell's bid for a round one debut remains strong.

"That's the best you can do and he's given himself a chance," Nicks said.

Restricted free agent Stephen Coniglio put in a best-on-ground display with 35 disposals, 10 tackles and a goal.

"I've never seen anyone train like he does. He's elite with everything he does, so he deserves to come out and play really well in these games," Nicks said.

Meanwhile, the Swans are set to have Zak Jones (knee) and Jarrad McVeigh return next Sunday, with Kieren Jack also a chance to face Gold Coast as the Swans round out their JLT Community Series.

"McVeigh trained well today, Jones trained well today, Kieren Jack trained well. Not sure whether he'll play yet or not," Sydney coach John Longmire said.

"We had a few of the guys that trained this morning and trained quite well, so we'll be talking about them to see who comes into the mix next week."

Forward Sam Reid had his minutes managed, not having played since round three last season after various soft-tissue setbacks.

"Just need to get back in the swing of it now. It's good that he got through the game," Longmire said.
