CONSECUTIVE losses to Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney have put a dampener on St Kilda's bright start to the season but coach Alan Richardson will continue to focus on the positives.

The Saints won four of their first five games before going to down to Adelaide by 29 points last week, and Greater Western Sydney by 44 points on Saturday afternoon.

It was tough day for the visitors at UNSW Canberra oval against GWS, after they won the inside 50 count easily (62-42) but squandered any chance of an upset with their wasteful finishing and poor ball use.

The Saints trailed by 43 points early in the second term before reducing the deficit to just 15 mid-way through the third term, but continually let the Giants off the hook with their mistakes.

First-year forward Matthew Parker had a chance to close the gap to 10 points in the third quarter but missed a set shot from dead in front, while Dean Kent finished with 2.4 for the match.

"There were parts of our games that worked (but) there was clearly parts that didn't work," Richardson said after the loss.

"We got a lot of opportunities, but we just weren't able to finish out work, and they were a bit more efficient when they had their opportunities.

"Our build-up at times was a bit too slow and they were able to get numbers back, and they defended really well.

"I reckon there were two or three plays when we would kick a behind or kick it out on the full, and they were able to go down (the other end and kick one).

"They were better than us there's no doubt about that but when you're on the road against a good team, you need to make the most of your opportunities and we didn't do that.

"We gave ourselves a chance to hit the scoreboard more regularly than we have done, so that will give our players some level of gratification, but clearly we need to get better at getting some score."

The Saints did well to halt the home side momentum after the shocking opening term in which they gave up 8.2 to the Giants from just 13 inside 50s and laid just seven tackles.

Richardson said the way his team showed up in the first quarter was a worry.

"The first quarter was poor, and they (the Giants) were brilliant at the start," he said.

"They smashed us physically and that was really disappointing, that’s been a strength of ours (this season).

"We didn't test them at all in terms of run in that quarter.

"It is the second time (we've started slowly) on the road, the Fremantle game (in round three) was the same, so we'll work through that.

"We'll lick our wounds and get ready for West Coast next week."

Defender Jimmy Webster could be in doubt for the Eagles clash at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night with the Saints sweating on scans on a suspected fractured hand in coming days.

Webster appeared to suffer the injury early against GWS but courageously played out the match.
