Dawson had taken an overhead mark in defence after backpedalling, only for Hawkins to collect him in the head with a raised left forearm in the final term.

The Swan recovered quickly from the shock and ran off to take advantage of the 50m penalty awarded by the umpire.

Hawkins was among the Cats' best with four goals as Geelong held off the persistent Swans to record their a seventh straight win and open a two-game gap at the top of the ladder.
