COLLINGWOOD forward Ben Reid faces yet another stint on the sidelines after suffering a calf injury in the opening minutes of his side's heavy loss to North Melbourne.

Kangaroos debutant Kyron Hayden's first game also ended early on a sour note after he suffered a suspected serious Achilles injury before half-time.

Reid grabbed at his lower right leg following a marking contest in the opening minutes of the match and was immediately taken from the field.

The forward was taken down the race to receive treatment, and he reappeared on the bench in a tracksuit before the end of the final term.

More woe followed for the Pies with Brayden Sier ruled out for the second half due to concussion. He copped a heavy hit to the body from Jack Ziebell early in the first quarter.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley confirmed Reid's injury was a calf problem, while saying Sier "was there in body only" in the first half with what may have been delayed effects of concussion.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Hayden had been playing on Scott Pendlebury and doing an admirable job containing the Collingwood captain's influence.

North Melbourne coach Rhyce Shaw said the early signs weren't good for the youngster.

"I think it's an Achilles. We'll obviously get a scan, but it looks pretty bad for the kid," Shaw said.

"It's really disappointing, because he's put in two months of really hard work. We laid out a specific role for him and he's been playing that role really well.

"He got his chance and it's really sad for him. I know all of the boys are really disappointed, but you know how tight they are. They got him in the group, sung the song and sprayed Gatorade all over him."
