GREATER Western Sydney looks set for a busy trade period with Carlton continuing to eye off contracted tall Adam Tomlinson.

Tomlinson is a required player at the Giants and the expansion club would need to shift its initial position for him to end up at Carlton.

The Victorian-raised Tomlinson has played 53 games for the clubs in four seasons as a key defender or key forward, but managed just eight senior games in 2015 as the Giants preferred to play Jeremy Cameron, James Stewart, Cam McCarthy and Nick Haynes ahead of him.

The club also had Jonathan Patton return from a knee reconstruction late in the season and Caleb Marchbank made his debut.

AFL.com.au understands the Giants rate Tomlinson highly but would potentially consider a strong offer to release the 22-year-old.

The Blues have expressed interest in several GWS youngsters as the Giants' former list manager, Steve Silvagni, begins to rebuild the squad at the club he represented in 312 games.

Both Carlton and the Giants are juggling several potential trades simultaneously as the exchange period begins.

The Giants have Adam Treloar leaving for Collingwood, Curtly Hampton likely to join Adelaide, Jacob Townsend hopeful of moving to Richmond and Cam McCarthy still keeping his fingers crossed he can get to Fremantle despite GWS remaining adamant he is not going.

The Giants still needed to reduce their overall list size at the end of 2015 as part of the club's establishment rules, so they were always expecting to lose players as the list solidified.

GWS is also understood to have been one of several clubs to inquire about Geelong veteran Steve Johnson but the Cats star is a long way from making a decision.

His former teammate, ruckman Dawson Simpson, who is an unrestricted free agent, is also a chance to join Greater Western Sydney in support of Shane Mumford.

Meanwhile, the Blues will trade out Chris Yarran to Richmond and Lachie Henderson to Geelong, and are understood to have put Levi Casboult on the trade table as new coach Brendon Bolton begins his time at the club.

Casboult has been linked to the Brisbane Lions as they seek a key forward, with the Lions also set to grab strong-bodied midfielder Tom Bell, who is returning to Brisbane for family reasons.

Clubs believe Brisbane Lions free agent Matthew Leuenberger is leaning towards joining Essendon as a free agent although he has not yet officially made the decision between the Sydney Swans and the Bombers.

Leuenberger is set to become the fourth free agent to exercise his option this off-season, with Hawthorn's Matt Suckling joining the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield and West Coast's Scott Selwood wanting to join Geelong.

Dangerfield looks set to be traded to the Cats for a first and second-round draft pick, while the Eagles have to make a decision on whether to match Geelong's offer for Selwood soon.

West Coast's Callum Sinclair remains on the Swans' radar but he is a required player, so his future will not become clearer until the middle of the week.

North Melbourne has sounded out Melbourne utility Jeremy Howe about a possible shift to the Kangaroos but Gold Coast remains the frontrunner for his services.

AFL.com.au understands the uncontracted high-flyer attracted interest from North as the likelihood of him departing the Demons grew.

The 25-year-old played his 100th game with Melbourne in the final round but he has played in just 22 wins since making his debut in round 11, 2011.

The Suns made a presentation to him last week and are understood to be very keen on him joining the fledgling club, with a role as a mobile forward alongside Tom Lynch likely to suit Howe.

They are also likely to be in a better position to get a deal done quickly with the Demons.

Melbourne hold pick No.6 and the Suns have pick No.3 and potentially pick No.10 if they trade Charlie Dixon to Port Adelaide. They might be able to shuffle picks in any deal involving Howe.

On Friday, Howe's manager Ben Niall indicated on trade radio Howe was more likely to leave the Demons than stay.

He is expected to make a decision when he returns from Bali this week.

North Melbourne is also interested in Hawthorn's Jed Anderson and won't die wondering about luring a midfielder to the club, having expressed interest in Collingwood's Paul Seedsman and the Giants' Adam Treloar during this trade period.

Jostling for picks up the draft order is expected to be a feature of the trading period as clubs are looking to fill specific needs in what is considered a shallow draft.

It will make the negotiations intriguing in what promises to be the busiest trade period in AFL history.
