FORMER Collingwood forward Ben Crocker pressed his claims for a spot in Adelaide's round one side with a standout performance in an under-23 trial game against Port Adelaide on Saturday.

However, Crows train-on player James Mathews has a suspected torn ACL while midfielder/forward Ned McHenry didn't finish the game with back and hamstring tightness.

Crocker booted three goals, using his pace and smarts to make the most of his chances playing as the deepest forward at times, while also going higher up the ground.

The 23-year-old played 26 games at the Magpies, but was stuck behind Jordan De Goey, Jaidyn Stephenson and Jamie Elliott in a classy attack.

Key forward Darcy Fogarty also kicked three goals, building into his work in his first hitout after missing last week's Marsh Community Series game against Melbourne with a hamstring injury.

Fogarty's beautiful set-shot goalkicking was on display with a lovely goal from a tight angle, followed by 50m bomb on the three-quarter time siren.

He was also at times working higher up the ground.

Chayce Jones showed his skill as a midfielder, working hard across the ground to get involved in several scoring chains.

Forward Ben Davis started well before having a quiet second half and Will Hamill won some key ground balls in defence.

Train-on player James Mathews – hoping to get signed to the rookie list in the supplemental selection period - impressed with his speed before coming off late in the game with injury.

Highly touted prospect Fischer McAsey, the sixth pick in last year's NAB AFL Draft, was solid in defence, midfielder Harry Schoenberg (No.24 overall) was industrious around stoppages, Ronin O'Connor (No.42) has the size to compete with mature bodies and Lachlan Gollant (No.48) was lively across half-forward.

Mathews suffered a knee injury after landing awkwardly from an aerial contest.

The speedy forward impressed as a SANFL player for the Crows before training with the club in the pre-season in a bid to earn a rookie contract in the supplementary selection period.

McHenry came off the ground in the third quarter.

He had back issues last year and was pushing for a senior debut.

For the Power, Geelong recruit Wylie Buzza provided a strong target up forward while also competing in the ruck.

Draftee Dylan Williams was dangerous at ground level, father-son recruit Trent Burgoyne caught the eye with a spectacular goal roving off a pack, Jake Patmore was lively on a wing in his return from a torn ACL and Willem Drew and Joe Atley controlled the midfield.

Crows speedster Ned McHenry came off the ground in the third quarter and didn't finish the game.

Power defender Riley Grundy sustained a knock to his knee in the last quarter, while Crows half-back flanker Andrew McPherson only played the first half as part of his load management.

Both teams fielded several over-age players.

For the Crows, experienced defenders Kyle Hartigan, making his way back from ankle surgery, and Jake Kelly won crucial one-on-ones.

Power veteran Brad Ebert also got a valuable run under his belt ahead of next week's final Marsh Community Series game against the Western Bulldogs at Whyalla.

Sam Mayes, Jarrod Lienert and Cam Sutcliffe were the Power's other over-age players.

The Power led by 34 points at half-time, but the Crows stormed home before falling six points short – 10.15 (75) to 10.9 (69).
