ESSENDON is in negotiations with GWS to play a match for premiership points in California as early as next season.

Bombers CEO Xavier Campbell on Wednesday revealed to an Essendon business luncheon at Crown Palladium that the two clubs were set to sign documents over the project.

Los Angeles and San Francisco are the two cities being looked at for the match, which will be a Giants home match.

The venue may be reliant upon the International Cricket Council’s desire to hold a T20 World Cup in the United States, as there are no feasible AFL-sized playing arenas in the States.

It is believed the Giants and Bombers will push for the match to be a season-opening fixture.

While it is possible that the game could be held in the 2021 season, 2022 is more likely to be the earliest possibility.

Playing an official game in the United States has long been a dream of AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, who coached Essendon to four premierships and was the inaugural Giants coach.

The appeal of California is based on the relative close proximity to Australia as well as the state being the fifth’s largest economy in the world.
