GARRY Lyon will return to television in 2017 as co-host of Footy Classified in what is expected to be a long list of media roles for the Melbourne great following a season-long hiatus.

Lyon confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that he would return to television after standing down from all media duties for the 2016 season as he battled a mental health condition.

"I love Footy Classified and have loved doing it in the past and thankfully, I have an opportunity to resume my role with three people I respect and look forward to working alongside again," Lyon said in a statement released by Channel Nine.

Lyon will resume his role on the Monday night program alongside co-host Craig Hutchison and panelists Caroline Wilson and Matthew Lloyd.

He has also been linked to a role on Melbourne radio station SEN as breakfast host and a special comments position with Fox Footy.

Prior to his 2016 hiatus Lyon also wrote a regular column for Fairfax Media and was co-host of Access All Areas on AFL.com.au.

Lyon's break from the game came after it was revealed by a Melbourne newspaper in February that he had fallen out with Footy Show co-host Billy Brownless over a relationship with Brownless' former wife Nicky.

The 49-year-old was replaced as host of The Footy Show by Rebecca Maddern and will not return to the Thursday night program.
