FORWARD Mason Wood is planning to divide his time between attack and the wing this season in a bid to cement a regular senior berth with North Melbourne.

Wood, 21, made his debut for North in round 23 last season against Melbourne, when the Roos rested a host of senior players before their opening finals clash against Essendon.

The 192cm ex-Geelong Falcon impressed with three goals against the Demons, but was dropped a week later and did not play any part in North's finals campaign.

As he prepares to enter his third season at Arden Street, Wood knows competition for spots in North's attack will be fierce, especially among the tall forwards.

Along with Wood, Drew Petrie, Ben Brown, former Blue Jarrad Waite, Aaron Black, Robbie Tarrant and Majak Daw are among the tall targets the Roos can call on in 2015.

But Wood told NMFC.com.au he did not see himself as a key forward, saying he hoped to create a niche for himself as a mobile lead-up option, utilising the elite endurance that saw him finish second in North's 2km time trial before Christmas.

"I can see myself playing a bit further up the ground (and) a little bit more mobile in the position that is in between key forward and mid/small forward," Wood said.

"If I can play that sort of role, I can be real handy, using my work rate and getting up and down the ground a lot more."

Wood envisages he will spend time on the wing in 2015 as part of his new role.

"A bit of both is what we're after and finding the balance, because if you lock yourself down in the one position it makes it that much harder to get a game," he says.

"If I'm going to be a consistent player, there's not really one player – unless you're a key position player, which I'm not going to be exactly – that can't play another position.

"You've just got to find a way to make yourself more valuable to the team."

Woods' pre-season suffered a minor setback last Monday  when he experienced hamstring tightness during the Roos' first training session after the Christmas break.

But Wood is confident he will resume full training soon.

"I had another bout of tightness after Utah (a pre-season camp in November) which cleared up in a few days, so I'm just going to be taking it cautiously again and make sure we get it right," Wood says.

"(The club medical staff) are going to manage my loads for probably two weeks and then (I'll be back) into it."
