COLLINGWOOD recruiting manager Derek Hine sat up and took notice in July when Claremont's Brenden Abbott kicked five goals against Swan Districts to tilt a tight game his team's way.

Up against experienced WAFL defender Tallan Ames, the performance showcased Abbott's talent.

"To be able to play at that level, given his lack of exposure to the WAFL system, was really encouraging," Hine told AFL.com.au

Born on New Year's Day 1995, Abbott was eligible for last year’s NAB AFL Draft after playing in defence with Claremont colts.

But his exposure was limited because he had to return to his hometown Albany for personal reasons.

The 19-year-old could have dropped off the radar but he worked his way back into the WAFL and settled back into the football lifestyle in Perth.

It allowed him to find some consistent form, using his explosive pace off the mark and goalkicking smarts the Magpies hope will give them some added spark inside 50.

The Magpies expect him to benefit from being at Collingwood and see plenty of upside.

Hine also said it was a no-brainer to select Michael Manteit with the club’s first pick in the rookie draft given he was on the Magpies' list of potential selections heading into last Thursday's national draft.

Collingwood hopes Manteit can help release some of its more experienced defenders into the midfield as part of the team's development.

Hine said the club hoped Marley Williams, Ben Sinclair and Tom Langdon would be exposed to the midfield during 2015 and their selections reflected that desire.

Alongside Manteit, the Pies picked his teammate Brayden Maynard and defender Matthew Goodyear in Thursday night's national draft.

A consistent performer with the Sandringham Dragons, Manteit's attitude is first class.

"He will attack the system," Hine said.

The Magpies also redrafted Tony Armstrong as a rookie and officially added international rookie Mason Cox to the list.

Collingwood’s rookie draft picks
Selection No.8 – Michael Manteit (Sandringham Dragons/Melbourne High)
Recruiting manager Derek Hine says: "He's a mid-sized utility player who has played back and on the wing and was a priority for us in the rookie draft."

Selection No.26 – Brenden Abbot (Claremont)
Recruiting manager Derek Hine says: "His form at a senior level at the WAFL was encouraging. He is a really powerful player with elite speed off the mark who could have an impact inside our forward 50 as the third tall."

Selection No.43 – Tony Armstrong (Collingwood)
Recruiting manager Derek Hine says: "We obviously know he can come into the team, play multiple roles and not look out of place."

Selection No.60 – Mason Cox (International USA)
Recruiting manager Derek Hine says: "He is exceeding expectations every time he hits the track. He has had a seamless transition into our playing group as a developing ruck."
