BRISBANE Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown has expressed his desire to play alongside out-of-contract Hawthorn superstar Lance Franklin.

The Lions have confirmed they have plenty of money to lure Franklin to the Gabba, and Brown told AFL.com.au the star Hawk would make a huge impact on and off the field if he moved north.

With Franklin out of contract at the end of the season, the Lions have added their name to the list of clubs chasing the full forward, and Brown could not be more excited.

"We'd love to have Buddy Franklin up here," he told Gen Y Footy.

"Obviously I'm getting a bit long in the tooth down in the forward line so it'd be nice for a big star key forward to come along and take control of Brisbane's sporting landscape.

"How good would that be (to play alongside him)?"

And the Lions have plenty of money to throw around too.

Currently the Lions use 95 per cent of their salary cap, but football manager Dean Warren confirmed they would spend 100 per cent of it from next season.

"We wouldn't be saying we're throwing our hat in the ring with Buddy unless we had the room," Warren said.

"The club's in a situation now where we've got some flexibility in our cap to have a look at that, whereas in the past we may not have been able to do that.

"We're reasonably comfortable that we've got a talented younger group, but there's a gap in the more mature age players and we need to bolster that with some quality talent in certain positions.

"If we could secure someone like Buddy Franklin, outstanding achievement, but there's probably 17 other clubs interested as well."

Brown and fellow triple premiership player Simon Black are out of contract at the end of the year and have both indicated they will wait until then to decide on their futures.

Warren said paying below the salary cap had nothing to do with the club's finances, but was more a reflection of their youthful list and paying them accordingly.

He said offering Franklin big bucks would not impact their ability to re-sign out-of-contract players Daniel Rich, Matthew Leuenberger and Pearce Hanley.

Earlier this week, West Coast midfielder and Franklin's good friend Sharrod Wellingham predicted Fremantle would make a big play for the star Hawk.

"I just know that they are one of the teams who are going make a play for him, I suppose," he said.
