HAWK ruckman Max Bailey's surprise retirement was the biggest news on a quiet day two of the Gillette AFL Free Agency Period. Eddie Betts, Colin Sylvia and Matt White remain the only players to have completed moves, with Lance Franklin's defection to Sydney still under scrutiny by the AFL.

Hawks playing Longer game?
Bailey's Saturday night retirement adds impetus to the Hawks' pursuit of young Brisbane Lions ruckman Billy Longer.

The Hawks appear in the box seat to claim Longer, who wants to return home to Victoria, though he has also attracted significant interest from other Melbourne-based clubs.

Hawthorn is also reportedly keen on out-of-favour Carlton big man Shaun Hampson.

Shuey on the other foot
Talented West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey is reportedly warming to the idea of a return to Victoria.

Shuey, who still has one-year to run on his contract with the Eagles, has no shortage of Victorian suitors.

Melbourne coach Paul Roos has made no secret of his desire to add midfielders, and News Limited reports the Demons are among the clubs most interested in Shuey.

Collingwood is also believed to be in the mix.

Sun rising for Shaw?
Speculation in the Courier Mail links Magpies defender Heath Shaw with a move to Gold Coast as the Suns consider a move for a rebounding half-back flanker.

Shaw is believed to have spoken to as many as seven other clubs as he weighs up his football future away from Collingwood.

The Suns are not expected to be a major player during the trade period, but coach Guy McKenna reportedly has expressed his desire to add a crafty defender who uses the ball well.

Shaw, 28, is one of the best available at that position.
