A SEASON-ENDING injury to the Sydney Swans' Rhyce Shaw was the worst news for any of the finals contenders after round 22, but all have injury concerns on the eve of the finals.

After rupturing his ACL Shaw became the seventh premiership player on the sidelines, joining Adam Goodes, Sam Reid, Lewis Jetta, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Alex Johnston and Mitch Morton.

Daniel Hannebery also went down in the third quarter against the Cats with what initially looked like a serious knee injury.

However, a relieved coach John Longmire said the midfielder – who was close to best on ground in the 2012 Grand Final – had merely suffered a corkie. Hannebery played out the game but there was a suggestion from Dr Peter Larkins that he may have a minor medial strain.

Geelong coach Chris Scott admitted Tom Hawkins is being managed due to a back injury as the club prepares for finals. He played three quarters as planned this week and did not look to aggravate the problem at all.

Steven Motlop was under a slight cloud going into the game with a tight hamstring, but his leap to stake a claim for mark of the year late in the game showed he had plenty of bounce in his legs, while Paul Chapman made a successful return.

Ladder leaders Hawthorn were dealt a blow with on-baller Liam Shiels damaging his troublesome right ankle. It was his first senior game since round 14 but he is in doubt for the finals.

Cyril Rioli left the ground late in the game to have treatment on his ankle, but Alastair Clarkson said it was a precaution and he was confident the star would be right next week.

Jordan Lewis, a late withdrawal with a corked hip, and Paul Puopolo who missed with calf soreness, are both expected to be available in round 23.

Fremantle expects Luke McPharlin to return next week for one game before the finals. He has not played since round 15 after suffering a calf injury.

Clancee Pearce and Garrick Ibbotson are also touch and go for round 23 with calf injuries.

Unfortunately an injury to Nick Suban may create a spot for them to take after he was subbed out of the game early against Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

Chad Wingard was subbed out of the match for Port Adelaide with an adductor strain and will be watched closely.

Collingwood subbed off Luke Ball at half-time against the Eagles on Friday night with a calf injury. He was a late withdrawal against Greater Western Sydney in round 18 with a similar problem so he will be monitored during the week.

The Magpies have a long break, playing next Sunday against the Kangaroos in the final round. It remains to be seen whether it will give Darren Jolly a hit-out in the seniors in the final game.

Carlton – who are a finals chance only if Essendon loses its points – lost key midfielder Brock McLean to a quad injury early in the game against the Bombers.

The Blues champion midfielder Chris Judd is also making a bid to be right by week one of the finals.

North Melbourne has lost Scott Thompson for the rest of the season so will be without its key defender if it tumbles into the finals. Jack Ziebell remains some chance to return, while Nathan Grima will not play again this season after sustaining a foot injury against Essendon last week.
