MELBOURNE’S fighting spirit was questioned all week in the wake of the “bruise-free footy” debate, but there was no questioning Nathan Jones’ spirit as he fought off Angus Monfries in the forward pocket. A massive punch out of a tight pack, parked in front of Melbourne’s goal square, forced Jones and Monfries into a foot race as the ball careered towards the boundary line.

Jones got there first and collected the ball, but under huge pressure from his opponent was forced to his knees. He still had the presence of mind to turn around and fire a handball to captain Brad Green, who produced the highlight of the opening half.

On the run, the skipper kicked a spectacular torpedo off one step from 30 metres out for his second goal of the night, a team-lifting major that ensured the Demons remained in touch at the main break.
