The 18-year-old half-back flanker impressed for SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens this season with his pace and courage.
Standing 177cm, Petrenko can also play on the ball and should push for senior selection next year after featuring regularly amongst the Eagles' best in the league side.
In other rookie list news out of West Lakes former Geelong Falcon Ed Curnow has not been offered a second season with the club, while Brodie Martin and James Moss have each accepted second-year positions.
Petrenko's upgrade means Adelaide will take five picks – 10, 28, 44, 60 and 76 – into the NAB AFL Draft.
Martin and Moss are joined by the club's first international rookie, Irishman Brian Donnelly, which leaves the club with three picks in the rookie draft after the rookie list was expanded to six for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
