1993-2003, 180 games, 299 goals. (HAW) 2003, 10 games, 14 goals. (b: 3 May 1974 201 cms 100 kgs). The big ruckman showed his true colors in 1997 when he took the step up to being one of the League's best ruckmen. Extremely mobile and sharp for someone so big he was a beautiful kick for goal and had all the attributes to play a Simon Madden-type role for the Saints for years to come. Originally from Hastings he was nurtured in the St Kilda team in the old under-19 competition and had a memorable senior debut in the opening round of 1993. But his development stalled for a number of reasons. Through his teenage years his ambitions were only to play for Hastings and he wasn't interested in the AFL. In 1994 he was only getting an occasional run in the ruck and he lost confidence and his performances trailed off badly. In 1995 he suffered a bad spiral break to his finger when he tackled a teammate at training. An in-house survey at St Kilda jolted Everitt when he found that teammates thought he was a man with great talent yet wasn't using it. Everitt's reaction was that he never realised the others thought he had that ability. When he returned for the last four games the transformation was obvious. In the final round he began with four goals in six minutes in a stunning start and finished with six for the day. He starred in the Ansett Cup series that culminated in the 1996 night flag and gradually took a greater leadership role within the club and took a greater say in the running of the forward line. A jaw injury kept him out of the first three games but then he had a mixed season with some fine games and others that were ordinary. He emerged as a cult figure with the dreadlocked hairdo and tattoos on his breast and ankle. Three rounds into 1997 he demanded a talk with coach Alves at a time when he was in danger of being dropped. He had done everything in pre-season with a view to playing in the ruck. After three weeks of not getting a kick and having everyone on his back he wanted a change. He saw his Victorian selection in 1997 as the highlight of his career but when he injured a shoulder in the first week of the finals it was a disaster for player and club. He trained for the Grand Final in a desperate bid to make the team but he could not come through.
