IRONICALLY nicknamed 'Rowdy' because of his quiet, unassuming nature upon arriving at Victoria Park, Gavin Brown let his actions do the talking on the footy field.

During 254 matches at Collingwood, the courageous warrior would go from a shy boy from Templestowe to one of the Magpies' favourite sons. Whether it be on a wing or playing in a key position, Brown's ability to win a one-on-one contest made him one of the standouts for his time.

While he performed many acts of bravery during his distinguished career in the black and white, he is perhaps best remembered for the courage he displayed in returning to the field during the Magpies' drought-breaking premiership win in 1990. Felled during the infamous all-in brawl at quarter-time against Essendon, Brown would later return, an inspirational goal helping the Magpies shake off their Colliwobbles and register a memorable victory.

He assumed the captaincy in 1994 and would lead the Maggies for five seasons, his ability to inspire his team through a typically courageous act on the field becoming the stuff of legend. He earned three Copeland Trophies, 11 Victorian jumpers but, what was more treasured for the ever-loyal Brown, was the premiership medallion.
