Alternative jumpers
Hi Matt, are there any plans to wear red and blue in more games next season? I can't stand seeing us run out in the white guernsey. I understand the AFL imposes such policies that require the white jumper for certain games but can't the MFC fight to protect their traditional jumper like Collingwood do? Cheers.

Matt says: Hi Jack, the alternative strip will have a traditional feel to it next year, but it will remain predominantly white. Interestingly, Melbourne was known as the ‘Invincible Whites’ in its very early days, so it will point towards that heritage. The AFL stipulates that clubs must have a clash jumper now. But don’t worry there will still be plenty of red and blue out on the ground next year!

No.1 Melbourne player
Hi Matt, Who is regarded as Melbourne’s first player?

Phil, St Kilda

Matt says: Fred Blackham has been given the No.1 cap, given 20 players made their debut for Melbourne in its first match against South Melbourne in round one, 1897. In the event of multiple players making their debut for Melbourne, they ordered alphabetically.

It’s a Grand Old Flag
Hello, I am a recent convert to AFL and have decided to follow the Demons. Would it be possible to send me the lyrics so I can practice?

Thanks, Graham Bannister

Matt says: Here is the song in full!

The Grand Old Flag
It’s a grand old flag, it’s a high-flying flag,
It’s the emblem for me and for you.
It’s the emblem of the team we love,
The team of the red and the blue.
Every heart beats true, for the red and the blue,
And we sing this song to you,
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the red and the blue.

Oh, the team played fine in the year Thirty-nine,
We’re the Demons that no one can lick,
And you’ll find us there at the final bell
With the spirit of Twenty-six.
Every heart beats true, for the red and the blue,
And we sing this song to you,
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the red and the blue.
