NORTH Melbourne captain Brent Harvey believes his side's skill errors in its losses to Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs were created by mental pressure rather than any shortcomings in preparation.

The Roos trailed the Hawks by 29 points at half time of Sunday's clash and, even though they kicked the first two goals after the break, poor disposal and decision-making contributed to the eventual 54-point margin.

"We train four times a week on our skills," Harvey said from Arden Street on Tuesday morning.

"When you go out there and you put yourself under pressure – obviously Hawthorn were pretty good on the weekend and their pressure was good – that certainly plays a part.

"When you lose by [nine] goals the effort's not there. The first half was pretty good but after half time we let ourselves down."

North is hoping its second win of the season comes against Essendon at Docklands on Sunday, however, the Bombers will be buoyed by their four-point win over Carlton.

Defensive pressure ensured that victory and Harvey said North would train with that as a focus this week.

"Blokes like (Alwyn) Davey and (Andrew) Lovett, (Leroy) Jetta ... all their quick blokes really tackle well so we're going to put ourselves under pressure at training, train to that and hopefully go out on the weekend and perform," he said.

"We've just got to go back to the drawing board and get our skills right, just do what we've been doing and enjoy our footy. [We want to] go out there and take some risks."

Harvey had 23 touches against the Hawks, an improvement on his 17-possession average dictated by heavy tags in the clashes with the Dogs and Demons.

He said his responsibilities as captain had no bearing on what he sought from his performances.

"I don't put any extra pressure on myself to perform," he said. "I just go out there and I try to do what I do and hopefully the boys can learn something and follow.

"I probably need to do a lot more, being the leader of the footy club, but I've got confidence in my ability that I can definitely bounce back. It wasn't a bad game."

Despite falling to sides flagged to finish in the top four, Harvey said North still planned to set up its season with seven of its next eight games at Docklands.

"We've lost to two pretty good teams," Harvey said. "We certainly think our next three or four weeks we can really have a good crack and put ourselves in a good position."
