GEELONG national recruiting manager Stephen Wells says not having early access to draft selections, due to the club's recent success, is the situation you want to find yourself in as a talent identifier.

Wells, who headed the build of the 2007-08 Geelong grand final lists, said on the back of the Cats' heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn last Saturday that the focus was quickly back on the exchange and draft period.

"There will always be changes to your list and we've got to try and manage for the short and the long term," Wells told afl.com.au.

"We think that this year's draft will provide us with some good opportunities to do that.

"No doubt the later your picks are the more names you cross off before your selection, but that's just something you have to cope with and it's a good problem to have.

Wells, who is one of the finest recruiters in the business, has not had an earlier selection than No.7 in more than a decade in the top job.

Andrew Mackie (2002), Kane Tenace (2003) and Joel Selwood (2006) have all been claimed at No.7, with ex-Cat Leigh Brockman (1996), Joel Corey (1999) and Jimmy Bartel (2001) all taken at No.8.

As for next week's trade period, Wells said the club was "open-minded" and not locked into any hard and fast plans.

"We'll certainly look forward to discussions with all of the clubs and we'll see what comes of those discussions," Wells said.

"At this stage though, we don't plan to be heavily involved in trade week. But we may become involved as the week goes along."
