The Herald Sun reports the Dogs are interested in young Sydney Swans forward Patrick Veszpremi.
Veszpremi was the Swans first pick (No.11 overall) in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft, but has played just 11 games in three seasons, including only one this year.
Disgruntled Lion Justin Sherman, Carlton utility Andrew Walker and Geelong onballer Nathan Djerrkura have also been mentioned as possible trade targets for the Bulldogs.
The club is poised to use its first two selections in this year’s draft on father-son recruits Thomas Liberatore and Mitch Wallis, meaning it could opt to use the compensation pick received for Jarrod Harbrow as soon as November.
Adelaide and Port Adelaide are also poised to use the compensation picks, received in exchange for Nathan Bock and Nathan Krakouer, at this year's draft, according to another report in the Herald Sun.
Clubs can use the compensatory picks in any of the next five draft years.
Meanwhile, the footy world is still coming to grips with the realisation of Gary Ablett's long-rumoured move to Gold Coast.
The Geelong superstar has signed with the league's 17th club on a five-year deal reportedly worth almost $10 million.
Ablett has been linked to the Suns since late last year, but only announced his decision to take up the lucrative offer in a press conference on Wednesday.
The signing of Ablett shores up Gold Coast’s midfield, which already boasts the likes of former Brisbane Lion Michael Rischitelli and impressive youngsters Josh Toy and David Swallow, but coach Guy McKenna says the club is still in the market for an experienced ruckman and a forward.
Essendon is hopeful the other big signing of the week - James Hird to Windy Hill as senior coach - will convince several disgruntled and out-of-contract players to stay with the club.
Brent Stanton, Leroy Jetta, David Myers and Bachar Houli are all yet to re-sign.
Houli, who received limited opportunities under Matthew Knights, has been targeted by Richmond, but the midfielder says the appointment of Hird could convince him to stay at Essendon.
The Bombers are also warming to the prospect of recruiting North Melbourne ruckman/forward David Hale, according to the Herald Sun.
The Australian reports that Carlton may reignite the career of James McDonald, who reluctantly retired after round 22.
There is also a suggestion North Melbourne is preparing to offload promising talent Gavin Urquhart, and will look to bring in draft picks over players if it can land a suitable trade for him and Hale.
Across the Nullarbor, West Coast has headed off any potential challenge for Victorian-born midfielder Matt Rosa, with the 23-year-old agreeing to terms with the club.
