WEST Coast looks set to enter its final pre-season hit-out missing star players Dean Cox, David Wirrpanda and captain Darren Glass, who may all be rested from the side that faces Hawthorn in Friday's NAB Challenge match at Visy Park.
However, opportunities are likely to be given to key position player Adam Hunter and midfielders Matt Rosa and Brad Ebert – all returning from post-season surgery.
Assistant coach Peter Sumich said the club was reluctant to fly Cox to Melbourne, while Glass and Wirrpanda were both due for a rest against Fremantle last Saturday but pushed for selection because of the game's link to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
"At this stage Glassy will rest, more than likely Wirra as well and we'll weigh up Coxy," Sumich said on Tuesday.
"Darren Glass and Wirra haven't missed a beat – they've played three weeks in a row. And that's probably the concern, that they did play the three.
"They wanted to play against Fremantle. We had them earmarked to miss that game and then play the last one ... so [they'll] just have to miss out this week.
"[But] Hunter, Rosa and Ebert [are] more than likely all available. So we're looking forward to those players playing."
Hunter, who had a shoulder reconstruction last July, is yet to play this pre-season and Sumich said the 27-year-old's injury would require constant monitoring.
If selected to face the Hawks, Hunter will be used at both ends of the ground for just over a half.
"We'll see how he trains today, but more than likely he should be available," Sumich said.
"Throughout the weeks we'll find our certain things about [his shoulder], how he's going to handle it [and] whether he can get through a whole year … looking like it's sore.
"It's really a bit of wait and see and getting information from Adam on how it's going week in week out."
Sumich said the assignment against Hawthorn should give the young Eagles an idea of how capable they are against a quality zone defence.
And with premiership players Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin and Sam Mitchell searching for game time before round one, Sumich said West Coast would also be measured against the competition's best.
"That's what we're after. So that's great for us, to see where we are," he said.
"Hopefully coming up against the best zoning side, or the first side to put it in place, we can get a result or see how it goes from our side of things.
"We've adjusted slightly but we've got to make sure that you don't follow sides. I'm a big believer, and John (Worsfold) is as well, we don't want to follow sides exactly to the tee.
"You want to make sure you put a certain game plan in place and tinker with it your way."
