In what could have been a costly turnover at a critical point in Friday night’s win, Collingwood defender Tyson Goldsack's mistake earned the wrath of Heath Shaw before making amends with a goal only minutes later.

Twelve minutes into the third term, Goldsack turned the ball over in the centre of the ground which led to a Brad Johnson shot at goal.  The defender’s error incurred a spray from teammate Shaw.

“I stuffed a kick up and his (Shaw) man ended up marking and kicking at goal,” Goldsack told PieCast on Magpie Radio during the week.

“When you are out on the ground, you don’t take anything to heart and you want to do everything to win.”

Goldsack was able to bounce back only minutes later booting his first goal of the season and fifth for his career.

“It was a great team goal because it started from a kick out and led to eight or nine boys getting involved before I ended it with a goal.”

Goldsack isn’t the only defender damaging the scoreboard, over the last few weeks Magpie supporters have enjoyed watching Harry O’Brien, Heath Shaw and Nick Maxwell adding their names to the goal kicking chart.

“It’s about being offensive as well.  If my opponent is worried about me getting the ball and moving towards goals, it’s less work than I have to do on him.

“It’s definitely something we have been working on.  If we have an attacking mindset down in defence, the ball is more likely to stay up the other end of the ground.”

Last week’s win was Goldsack’s 40th senior match in his third season at the club.  The defender admitted there is a constant pressure to hold his spot in the senior side but believes the uncertainty provides extra motivation on the training track.

“It does get quite tough at times.  You want to do everything to help the team but at the same time you don’t want to lose your spot.

“The pressure is always there from the VFL but it’s a healthy pressure.”

The 22-year-old will play a key role in trying to break the renowned Hawthorn rolling zone when he lines up against the side on Saturday night.  While the Hawks haven’t had a stellar season, their recent record against the Magpies will give them confidence heading into Saturday night.

“The challenge is still there because we haven’t performed well against them.

“We have looked at their game plan a fair bit over preseason.  We have worked on it and talked about it and now it’s just a matter of implementing it.”
