The Swans Reserves have started their 2010 AFL Canberra campaign with a 62 point win over reigning premiers Belconnen at the SCG on Saturday.

Campbell Heath, who was selected at number 61 in the 2008 AFL Draft from Gippsland, was the Swans’ best with 19 possessions at half back. Nick Smith and Matthew O’Dwyer, who had 34 disposals apiece, playing on ball, were also named in the best.

Daniel Currie, who played in the ruck and at full forward, kicked four goals, while Sam Reid, with five goals from centre-half forward, also impressed.

And in a sign that it was a team effort, Ed Barlow at half back with 39 possessions rounded out the Swans’ best.

The Swans led by 29 points at quarter time after keeping Belconnen goalless in the first term. Reid opened the scoring for the Swans with a goal four minutes in after a mark and 50 metre penalty.

Currie was next with his first goal after a strong mark, 20 metres out, and a few minutes later top-up player Eugene Kruger put the Swans 17 points in front.  Reid kicked his second from a mark on the lead and Currie kicked the Swans’ final goal of the term from five metres out after a strong mark.

Belconnen kicked their first goal 26 seconds into the second term but the Swans piled on seven before the Magpies had a chance to kick their second.

Gary Rohan goaled from 35 metres, scholarship player Jackson Potter kicked one on the run from 60 metres and Reid goaled twice in two minutes.

At the 13 minute mark Mike Pyke kicked his first from the goal square and five minutes later Dylan McNeil goaled from 50 metres on the run. Reid had his fifth by the 20 minute mark of the second term to put the Swans in the lead by 63 points before Belconnen kicked their second and third goals.

Smith kicked the Swans’ last goal for the quarter, snapping from 20 metres after a ball up. Belconnen ended the quarter with their fourth and trailed the Swans by 50 points at half time.

The Swans lost Henry Playfair two minutes into the the third term when he injured his ankle. Belconnen once again opened the scoring with a goal eight minutes in but Lewis Johnston, playing his first game for the year after returning from injury, replied after a mark on the boundary.

Belconnen kicked two more goals for the quarter and, although Trent Dennis-Lane goaled on the run in the goal square for the Swans, the margin had slimmed to 46 points at the third break.

The Swans kicked away in the final term, keeping Belconnen to just one goal, while kicking five themselves.

Johnston kicked his second in the first minute of play on his left foot, on the run from 40 metres. Currie snared his third after good play from Patrick Veszpremi and a few minutes later Veszpremi kicked one himself from 40 metres after a strong mark.

Currie made it four at the 22 minute minute mark and the final Swans’ goal was kicked on the run from a tight angle by top-up player Monty Krochmal.

The Swans take on Queanbeyan in round two of the AFL Canberra competition on Sunday April 18 at Dairy Farmers Park in Canberra at 2pm.
