RICHMOND veteran Chris Newman will miss between four to six weeks with a right calf strain.

Newman pulled up short late in the final term of his club's five-point loss to Geelong at the MCG on Sunday, with scans revealing the severity of the injury on Monday.

The 32-year-old struggled to hobble off after twinging his calf and he immediately applied an icepack to the area on the interchange bench.

"This is the first soft-tissue injury Chris has had in his 12-year career. He’s a good healer and is optimistic the injury won’t keep him out of action for too long," Tigers elite performance manager Peter Burge told richmondfc.com.au.

"Chris is currently walking without crutches and has already started his rehab, to ensure he can get back to contributing on-field."

However, the Tigers confirmed Newman was expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

Newman has 240 career games to his name and could return for the club's clash with Essendon in round 11.
