ESSENDON defender Mark Baguley has had surgery on his hand and will miss at least the next month of pre-season training.

Baguley fractured the metacarpal (the long bone in the hand) at training last Tuesday and the club decided a plate needed to be inserted to help speed up the healing process.

Bombers doctor Bruce Reid said the club was now hoping Baguley's preparation for 2015 would not be interrupted.

"If you put a plate in there, which we wouldn't do for 'Joe Blow', because it's going to heal and there's no urgency, they can be in full training and not miss out on a pre-season," Reid told the club's website.

"If you don't plate it the problem is that all he can do is really run, he can't handle the ball for five weeks and he can't have contact for six (weeks)."

Baguley will be out of action for up to five weeks, although he has already started running at day five in his recovery.

In better news, key ruckman Tom Bellchambers has joined in full training and is in good shape after ankle surgery late last season.

Bellchambers' fitness looms as crucial, as he and Greater Western Sydney recruit Jonathan Giles attempt to replace Patrick Ryder in the ruck.

Livewire forward Nick Kommer is also progressing steadily, after surgery on both his shoulder and knee, according to Reid.

"Nick's been our real disappointment (from a medical point of view) from the last year," Reid said.

"We've had his shoulder reconstructed, which is going very well, and his patella tendon.

"We won't have him in full training until January, I would think."
