THE 2010 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships are underway, with a couple of sons of former players starring.

Joe Daniher, son of Essendon and Sydney Swans player Anthony Daniher, was best on ground for Vic Metro in its loss to South Australia, while Jack Viney, son of Melbourne's Todd Viney, was a standout for SA.

Daniher Snr played 115 games with South Melbourne/Sydney Swans and 118 games for Essendon, meaning Joe, like brother Darcy, can be claimed by either club under the father-son rule. He could also choose to go to neither, as Marc Murphy - who was father-son qualified for Brisbane Lions - chose to do when he went into the draft and was selected by Carlton with the number one pick in the 2005 draft.

Viney Snr was skipper at the Demons for two years, and played 233 games over 13 years.

The championships feature two new teams, with the World XVIII and the South Pacific sides both playing for the first time.

Both Victorian teams - which did so well in the U18 championships that wrapped up last week - were beaten, with South Australia, which was the runner-up to Vic Country in the U18s, recorded a strong win over Vic Metro.
