Darebin v Essendon at Bill Lawry Oval
- Essendon guaranteed itself a place in the finals with a win over Williamstown in round 13. The Bombers will be heading into round 14 confident they can finish the season and go into finals on a positive note against the 12th placed Darebin who suffered a seventh straight loss on the weekend.
- Emilia Yassir has improved each week since she joined the Bombers after NAB League and Vic Metro commitments in round 11. Yassir had her best output against the Seagulls with 13 disposals and seven tackles displaying why she is on AFLW recruiters’ radars.
Collingwood v Geelong at Victoria Park
- There were fears this highly anticipated match up would be lost when the VFLW was put on pause for the latest lockdown. The last time these teams met was way back in round one where the Pies came away as winners by just two points. Since then both the Cats and Pies have shown their premiership credentials so it’s fitting they meet again in the final round of the season.
- It’s the battle of the Imogen’s at the top of the VFLW goal-kicking ladder. Collingwood’s Imogen Barnett took back top spot from Casey’s Imogen Milford with three goals against the Western Bulldogs. Barnett currently sits on 20 goals for the season while Milford has 19, so the crowning of the league’s leading goal kicker will also go down to the wire this weekend.
Western Bulldogs v Casey Demons at Victoria University Whitten Oval
- It’s do or die for the Western Bulldogs who must defeat the Casey Demons if they want to play finals in 2021. The Dogs also need the Southern Saints to fall to North Melbourne to guarantee the spot in the top six, if not it will come down to percentage. Casey saw off Darebin in round 13 to further cement its place for finals.
- The Demons have added some experience late in the season, bringing in recently delisted North Melbourne AFLW player Kate Gillespie-Jones. An experienced player with 37 AFLW games, Gillespie-Jones made an instant impact for Casey against the Darebin Falcons.
Hawthorn v Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval
- Port Melbourne has the opportunity to go to second spot on the ladder with a win against Hawthorn. The Borough will also need Geelong to go down to Collingwood to go into finals with a double chance. The Hawks have won three of their last five games, losing two of those by eight points or less, so will want to end the season with a statement. It seems Port Melbourne has recaptured the form that made it formidable at the beginning of the season, so the Borough will head into the game favourites.
- Sending off captain Meg Hutchins with a win in her last-ever game will provide extra motivation for the Hawks this weekend. Hutchins, a VFLW premiership player, has played over 300 games of football over an 18-year career, she’s been as reliable as ever in her final season, averaging 16.1 disposals, 2.3 marks and 3.3 tackles.
Southern Saints v North Melbourne at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Oval
- Like the Western Bulldogs, the Southern Saints’ match up against North Melbourne is a must win game if they want to stay in the top six. The Saints had a scare against Carlton, yet showed plenty of composure to regain the lead and jump back into the top six. North’s chances aren’t completely over yet. It’s not likely, but if they can win they’ll need results to go their way to sneak into finals.
- Deanna Jolliffe made her presence felt against Carlton in round 13. The tough mid lay some big bumps on opponents and applied plenty of pressure, finishing with a game-high 12 tackles.
Williamstown v Carlton at Downer Oval
- Carlton gave the Southern Saints an almighty scare last week, piling on five goals to none in the third quarter to go 14 points up. The Blues couldn’t hold on, but it will give the young side plenty of confidence coming up against a Williamstown team that hasn’t had a win since round four.
- Jennifer Lew made her return to the Blues side, playing her first game since round four. Lew was one of the Blues’ best players, kicking two crucial goals from 14 disposals. Her desperation for the footy and work rate was on display inside forward 50 and will be crucial against Williamstown.
