Umpire recruitment and retention continues to be a major issue at all levels of the game. In 2006 there are over 539,000 registered Australian Football players and close to 10,000 umpires. In 2005 the total umpire numbers grew by 1% compared to a 4.6% increase in players, placing further pressure on the demand for umpires.
Umpire turnover also continues to be a challenge. While 25% umpires are recruited every year the same percentage also drops out, a majority of these having umpired for less than two years. The key reason for drop out is a perceived lack of support from players, coaches and spectators.
This is where the Green Shirt Program makes a difference. By wearing a green shirt, an umpire in training is clearly identified and is offered encouragement and fair go. The Umpire Mentoring Program pairs experienced umpires with new umpires and offers further support.
The Umpire Green Shirt Program and the Umpire Mentoring Program have been operating nationally for three years and have supported the development of more than 900 new umpires in 2005 and 1000 in 2005, which represents a 16% increase in participating umpires.
