EXCITING West Coast key position player Jeremy McGovern has signed a two-year contract extension with the Eagles.

McGovern, who made his debut as a defender against Carlton in round six, has become a key plank in West Coast's forward line. Since returning against Hawthorn in round 12 he has kicked 10 goals and has taken 32 marks.

The Eagles promoted the 22-year-old to their senior list this year after three seasons as a rookie.

His first pre-season on the senior list started poorly. After missing most of last year due to hip surgery McGovern returned to pre-season training out of shape and was asked to train away from the group on an individual program.

McGovern credited new coach Adam Simpson for guiding him through that period.

"I got off to a bit of a rocky start when I turned up out of shape for pre-season training, but ‘Simmo’ had an honest chat with me and he has helped me turn things around," McGovern said.

"He has been very supportive and I really appreciate the chances he has given me. I'm also grateful to the club for sticking by me through the tough times."

His form in the WAFL warranted a call-up in round six and again in round 12 and he has not missed a game since. When Darren Glass retired, he explained one of his reasons was to give McGovern further opportunities at senior level.

McGovern, the son of former Claremont, Sydney Swans and Fremantle midfielder Andrew McGovern, said he was rapt to sign the new deal.

“Obviously I am really enjoying my footy at the moment,” McGovern said.

“We have an exciting squad and I look forward to playing my role in helping the club reach its potential.

“The boys are all great and it was a no-brainer to sign for another couple of years.”

Eagles football manager Craig Vozzo said McGovern was a key component in West Coast's future.

"We see him as an important part of our future, as a key position player who is able to adapt to either end of the ground," Vozzo said.

"It is hard not to be impressed by what he has achieved at this early stage of his career, but we also know there is a way to go before he fulfils his potential."
