North Melbourne has taken a significant step toward playing games in Hobart with Bellerive Oval given the green light to host games by the AFL.

The league's head of marketing and strategy, Andrew Catterall inspected the stadium yesterday and declared it ideal for AFL games.

"I know North Melbourne is very keen, very keen, to play games here. They have publicly stated that they would fully embrace the opportunity to work with the community in and around Hobart and throughout Tasmania," Catterall told the Hobart Mercury.

"I'm sure they would do a very good job and I'm sure they would do whatever it took to make this a very successful venture."

Catterall denied games in Hobart would be detrimental to games already played in Tasmania's north.

"Absolutely not. There would be no negative impact at all.

"If anything, having more games of AFL football in Tasmania builds the brand, builds the events, and strengthens the outcomes in Launceston as well as Hobart."

Catterall also said AFL games in Hobart would not only be beneficial for fans and supporters in Tasmania but would also stimulate the local economy, with a report by Deloittes estimating each game could bring $8.1 million into the state's coffers.

The cost to the Tasmanian Government would be $250,000 a game, a mere fraction of what it pays to have games in Launceston.

Southern Councils and the private sector have already committed $500,000 a game to the push and now it's up to the State Government to do its part.

"The joint working group, which includes the Hobart City Council and Chamber of Commerce, has done a fantastic job putting all the pieces in place and now they've passed it on to the government to consider," Catterall added.

"What's been really impressive about the proposal is that the Chamber of Commerce and HCC have been able to secure 50 per cent of the funding required making it more affordable and more assessable for the government.

"We have been lobbied for a very long time by many people about bringing AFL football to Hobart and this is a good opportunity to secure that."

Catterall was delighted in being able to describe Bellerive Oval "in great shape".

"It would be a wonderful experience for locals and tourists to come down and see games of AFL football here," he said.

"We've inspected the player facilities and the corporate facilities and public amenities...It's a wonderful place to come and watch footy."
