FREMANTLE will decide in the next day or two whether to progress its interest in Hawthorn free agent Xavier Ellis, the club's football manager Chris Bond says.

Speaking on Gillette Trade Radio on AFL.com.au on Tuesday, Bond confirmed the Dockers had spoken with Ellis' management.

But they are yet to make an offer to the uncontracted 25-year-old, he said.

"He has certainly been connected to us along the way and we certainly have spoken to his manager," Bond said.

"We're talking this week about whether we'll get him over and have a look at some medicals with him, but we haven't made that decision yet.

"We'll work through that in the next 24-48 hours."

A hugely talented but injury-prone midfielder, Ellis played an important part in the Hawks' 2008 premiership, but has managed only 16 games in the past three seasons.

He played just two senior matches in 2013, dogged by a recurring calf injury.

It appears unlikely Ellis will be offered a new contract by the Hawks.
