The much-maligned Saints tall had just five handballs in his first match of the season after battling an ankle injury.
He started the match in a three-pronged attack with fellow big men Nick Riewoldt and Rhys Stanley, but was dominated by Lions defender Daniel Merrett.
Koschitzke was well beaten when switched to the ruck, as Lions tall Broc McCauley had a night out with 36 hit-outs and 18 disposals.
That said, Saints captain Nick Riewoldt admitted it was "always good" to have Koschitzke in the side.
"He got through unscathed which was a real bonus, and it was a pretty tough night for forwards, very slippery and greasy conditions. But he got through and we've had a win," Riewoldt said.
Riewoldt hinted at the possibility of the Saints adopting the triple threat option up forward more often now that Koschitzke had returned.
"I think conditions allowing (we will). In retrospect, it didn't really suit the three-tall structure with how slippery and wet it was, but it's something that we've got up our sleeves that we'll be able to go to in the future," he said.
There was a scare for Koschitzke in the final term against the Lions when Ash McGrath landed on the back of his ankle as both players flew for a stray shot at goal from Jack Steven.
Koschitzke initially clutched at his lower leg, but played out the game including another stint in the ruck, without any sign of discomfort.
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon was pleased one of his key target men escaped uninjured, but gave little away about his short-term expectations of Koschitzke.
"It's the same as everyone else, give great effort and play your role," Lyon said.
